The Great Lengths One Will Go To
(Category: True Stories )

Hello faithful SBD readers! I am one of the beloved Snooze Crew that has taken over in Jim's absence.

I had to beg for help on some ideas of what to write about here while Jim is gone, and someone gave me a stellar idea. Favorite Summertime Memories.

My Favorite Summertime Memory happened about 10 years ago when my eldest daughter was 5 years old.

Every summer my parents rent a cottage in Northern Wisconsin for a week. However, this particular summer we went to my aunt and uncle's cottage somewhere near Spooner, Wisconsin. It's been many years since I have been there again, so I don't recall the name of the lake its on.

Anyway, my husband at the time, folks, myself, and my daughter decided we were going to go picnic on a sandbar in the middle of the lake. While we were there we were going to take in a little fishing as well. My daughter had the cutest little Kermit the Frog fishing pole that Grandpa, the fishing expert, had bought for her.

Once we had finished our lunch, some of us waded in the water, while Grandpa decided to show his granddaughter the fine art of finding where the fish are. Grandpa grabbed the Kermit pole as my daughter stood next to him watching eagerly. The line was cast. The pole given to the little tyke to hold and slowly reel in.

Once the line was reeled in, Grandpa grabbed the pole again, got ready to cast the line, and the pole flew out of his hands. We all watched as the pole flew into the water, slowly sinking. My daughter had immediately begun to cry. Grandpa without even skipping a beat, took his wallet out of his trunks and dove in after the pole. My mother was mortified that he was diving after a $10 item that could easily be replaced.

It only took 3 dives down for him to retrieve the pole as it sunk down into the weeds near the dropoff of the sandbar. But he got it! He brought it up to the boat and my daughter smiled.

Sadly, that pole never worked right again. But it was the great lengths that my dad went to that had me in awe. He just could not let the pole go and run the risk of crushing his granddaughter's feelings.

So, what is one of your favorite summertime memories?
