Closing in on a tenth of a million
(Category: Weblog Stuff )

UPDATE: Time's up! All are aboard that are coming aboard. Now the waiting begins. Who will be the point winners? Ooooh...you can cut the tension with a butter knife.

Some time in the next couple of months I'll be getting my 100,000th visit (barring catastrophe, of course). That's pretty sweet. 100,000 visitors since 7/29/03 and it'll happen within the near future. Do I rock, or what?

But when exactly will it happen?

Make a guess what day I'll hit 100,000 and win some points!

Here's the rules:

  1. Only guesses in the comments here count. No email submissions, please.

  2. One guess per person. Make it good because it will be engraved in stone to be ne'er altered.

  3. One person per guess. The first person to pick a date gets that date.

  4. Guesses will be accepted through the end of the month.

  5. I reserve the right to make more rules as necessary (or just on a whim) as my clever but evil readers think of ways around the ones I've made.

If somebody nails the date they get 5 points and the nearest over/under each get 2 points. If nobody nails the date the nearest over/under each get 3 points. I might raise those a bit if there's a lot of participants.

The person closest to the date gets 6 points. The next closest over and under each get 3. The next closest over and under after that each get 1. That's 5 winners altogether. If nobody gets the date exactly I'll come up with some fancy algorithm to distribute the points (think 6 sided cube with dots on it) but all points will be given. That is my vow to you, dear readers.

My SiteMeter stats are open so feel free to take a look there and devise a predictive algorithm. The Xtreme tracking stats won't be as useful as I reset those each month.

My guess is February 19.

Barring any of those monstrous Paris Hilton deals, of course.

And why the HELL are you getting 4 times as many visits as I do, yet I get maybe 10 times as many comments?!

Posted by: Helen at January 21, 2004 08:03 AM

I reckon a more conservative estimate of 03/03/04

of course I could guess for tommorow and just set a bot running but that would be cheating .. wouldn't it?

Posted by: rob at January 21, 2004 08:44 AM

Helen - It's because I'm an erratic poster. People check back through the day to see if I've launched another gem (or another turd as the case may be). You consistently post once per day at around the same time. See? Irregularity has its benefits. And about the comments - the vast majority of my stuff is of the "read and groan" or "read and wonder why you wasted the time" varieties. Yours are almost always "read and BY GOD I've got to respond to that" type.

Rob - Yes, that would be cheating and not only would I pout, I'd also pitch a hissy fit. But I'd probably still exult at hitting 100,000 all the same. What can I say? I'm shallow like that.

Posted by: Jim at January 21, 2004 09:10 AM

ok so maybe I can start the bot and then people can guess how much it costs me in connection charges to get you up to 200,000 ... but frankly, I can't be arsed. I'm far to busy hitting penguins for 6

Posted by: rob at January 21, 2004 09:16 AM

Phew! Thank God for penguins and Yetis.

Posted by: Jim at January 21, 2004 09:18 AM

Hello. Average 1,300 hits per day, you're at 83,000 now - I'm guessing 2/21.

And I'll probably account for 20-30 of those hits.

Posted by: Brian Jones at January 21, 2004 09:44 AM

My guess, Jim, will be 2/29/04. You got it baby...Leap Year.

Posted by: Tiffani at January 21, 2004 10:05 AM

Ooh, Tiffani chose a good date. Damn, wish I'd thought of that.

Rob-my personal best with the penguins is now 578. Ha!

Posted by: Helen at January 21, 2004 10:28 AM

20 Feb...... I just want to be close to Helen......

;)

Posted by: Mike the Marine at January 21, 2004 10:29 AM

It will be Feb 4th.

Posted by: pylorns at January 21, 2004 11:15 AM

My guess is March 1st.

Posted by: Sue at January 21, 2004 12:04 PM

damn 577.6 and I can't beat it ... this is worse than that game where you push the bloke down the stairs...

Posted by: rob at January 21, 2004 12:11 PM

There's a game for that? Wow, all those years of real life practice will finally pay off in the virtual world!

Posted by: Jim at January 21, 2004 12:23 PM

February 18th, I'm betting on slightly increasing views over the course of the month.

and how come the "Remember personal info?" never works for me? are you Mozilla challenged here too?

Posted by: MojoMark at January 21, 2004 02:10 PM

The remember info thing is a bit goofy and I still don't really understand why. It's something to do with the setup here in Munuviana. Many blogs sharing the same comment system. It should be remembering your info across blogs if you're on an individual archive page and when you come back to the same comments only page. If not, it might be your cookie settings.

Posted by: Jim at January 21, 2004 02:25 PM

Dang! 100,000 is a heckuva lot of hits. I'm still working on getting up to 65,000 but that's alright. Another sports star will allegedly molest a hotel worker and I'll get a 30,000 hit boost.

But I will put my money on March the 11th.

Posted by: Johnny Huh? at January 21, 2004 02:57 PM

Feb 25th. Because it's not yet taken. And if I hit the refresh button enough times that day I might make it!

Posted by: Simon at January 22, 2004 03:58 AM

well, I'm not too good at forecasting these sort of random events, so I'll pick Feb 13th, my son's birthday!

Posted by: jim at January 22, 2004 09:39 AM

I'm sure it will be February 17. Hope that's better than my Iowa prediction.

Posted by: Dan Spencer at January 22, 2004 01:38 PM

February 23.
Is that better? Did I underestimate your charisma enough this time. :)

Posted by: LeeAnn at January 22, 2004 06:36 PM

Please let it be on my birthday.

(February 10 for those playing at home.)

:)

Posted by: margi at January 22, 2004 07:07 PM

Shoot. I have to re-learn my freakin' URL.

Sorry 'bout that. But hey, I have a very motivated expression on my face right now. Aheh.

Posted by: margi at January 22, 2004 07:08 PM

Feb 24th

Posted by: Tuning Spork at January 22, 2004 09:18 PM

I din't say Feb 02! I said Feb 21!

Unless Rob really does his bot thing...

Posted by: Brian Jones at January 23, 2004 09:56 AM

Oops! Sorry Brian. It's fixed now.

Posted by: Jim at January 23, 2004 10:01 AM

Ok..I really wish it would be Mar 31, for my birthday, but I know it's going to be March 5...

Posted by: Mitzi at January 24, 2004 09:50 PM

I bet that Sitemeter will crash on Feb 22, and that they will discover that all their recent backups are bad.

Therefore you will not make the 100,000 mark until Jul 03.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at January 25, 2004 07:11 AM

100,000 in just over 4 months? I'm flattered.

Posted by: Jim at January 25, 2004 08:32 AM

I'll pick March 13! That's my co worker's birthday and also another co worker is getting married that day. It may bring me luck too :)

Posted by: Linda at January 28, 2004 08:01 AM

I can't believe I didn't respond to this earlier! I'm such a schmuck, and now I've let Rob beat me (yet again)! So if I can't have my birthday, I'll just go one day before. Please sign me up for March 2nd.

(Absolutely no scientific research went in to choosing this semi-arbitrary date.)

Posted by: Clancy at January 28, 2004 10:36 AM

Put me down for March 4, if no one's got it yet.

Posted by: Joey at January 29, 2004 12:31 AM

Clancy - I've revised my algorithm* and March the 2nd is now the outright leader with a predictive probability of 62.32% Wanna swap?

*a truly scientific methodology which has nothing to do with calendars and a dartboard - honest!

Posted by: Robert at January 29, 2004 06:39 AM

Rob - thanks for the offer, but I think I'll stick with 3/2.... I was late. Very late.

Posted by: Clancy at January 29, 2004 08:55 AM

I have to agree with Rob. My algorithm (which takes into account the phases of the moon and their effect on browsing patterns — or something like that) predicts March 2 as well. Since that wasn't available I had to sign up for the next date that was.

Posted by: Joey at January 29, 2004 11:15 AM

Despite being the holder of the highly prized spot, I believe it's gonna happen earlier. We haven't taken in account all extra refresh clickage that will be going on to boost the date....

I've gotta stop coming back here so often - I'm just boosting his numbers now....

Posted by: Clancy at January 29, 2004 11:28 AM

I'll take Feb 14, that holiday was invented for me and the wife. Thank you

Posted by: AlGore at January 29, 2004 05:47 PM

Al! Welcome back. Thought we lost you, you've been so quiet lately.

A true romantic, too. Very nice.

Posted by: Jim at January 29, 2004 08:09 PM

C'mon Jim. You're falling behind. We need some scandal, some google bait, something. Feb 18 is coming too quickly and the sitemeter seems to be in slow motion.

Here, try this.....

JOSH DUHAMEL NAKED PICTURES.

that got me over 1700 hits just yesterday (my average is about 300)

Posted by: MojoMark at January 30, 2004 12:34 PM

I don't think it'll help since I don't have Sitemeter counters in the comments.

Hmmm...I bet I could double my hits if I put those in...

Posted by: Jim at January 30, 2004 01:01 PM

March 7, hey why not.

Posted by: mog at January 31, 2004 09:57 PM

Bitch... where's my Josh pics??? :)

Posted by: Josh Fan at February 4, 2004 04:18 PM

Uh...what? What is a Josh pic? I've got The Joshua Tree but I'm sure not planning on giving it up.

Posted by: Jim at February 4, 2004 04:29 PM

crap, your JJ boobalanche has thrown my predictions out of the window ... looks like it will fall 6 - 8 days from now!

Posted by: rob at February 6, 2004 01:16 PM

Yes, the bounty of boobies continues to fall upon me. You should have used double exponential smoothing in your algorithm. It would have predicted Janet's boob show. Or at least the effects of it.

Posted by: Jim at February 6, 2004 02:05 PM

Ease up Sitemeter. You're just grinding metal.

Posted by: MojoMark at February 6, 2004 03:42 PM

God lord we're getting close now aren't we...

Posted by: Rob at February 10, 2004 04:00 PM

Yup. It's that last sprint to the finish line. Will Margi get it today? If it happens tomorrow, how shall I distribute the points as nobody picked that date. Oooooooh, the pressure's getting to me.

Posted by: Jim at February 10, 2004 04:02 PM

I've applied a lot of scientifical (that's a real word, you know?) analysis to this problem and I hereby predict the magic date to be February 11th.

When I said March 2nd before I was just guessing based on it’s proximity to my birthday...

Anyway - you read it here first!

Posted by: Clancy at February 10, 2004 08:32 PM

Wow, Clancy. I think you might be right! Damn, you're good.

Posted by: Jim at February 10, 2004 08:45 PM

hahahaahaha it will not be the 11th, it will be the 12th (wait, is this one of those time zone issues again? I mean you guys are over an international date line and all ... so basically we in the UK are however many days ahead it takes to make it March 3rd on what ever day you hit the Hundred thou - yeah that works and I'll even upload a photo of my watch to prove it!)

Posted by: Robert at February 11, 2004 09:06 AM

Nice try, Rob, but I happen to know that it is already April in the UK so you've missed your date. Besides, to make things easy on me (and really, isn't that what should be your major concern at all times?) all times are Atlanta local. That's EST (aka GMT-5).

Posted by: Jim at February 11, 2004 09:34 AM

Ta Da! The winner is.... nobody.

Posted by: MojoMark at February 11, 2004 06:24 PM

No dead on winner but I'll be distributing those points as promised to the folks closest to the date.

Hey, Rob! Can I muck about in my sidebar yet?

Posted by: Jim at February 11, 2004 06:31 PM

#100,003

Ta Da! and the winner is..... Nobody!

Janet Jackson's Boob was the killer, skewing all scientific theories.

Posted by: MojoMark at February 11, 2004 06:39 PM

The 100,000th visit was by someone on the aol network at a shade past 5:00 PM.

A tenth of a million. Hot damn!
