The Bestofme Symphony
(Category: Weblog Stuff )

That's pronounced "Best o' Me", by the way, and it's my idea for a new meme. There's all sorts of compilation memes for current content such as The Carnival of the Vanities and its offspring or Kate's Letter of the Day and Hunting of the Snark. We've even got LeeAnn's new Monday Madness and The Cheddar X that drive new content. But what is there for old stuff? Those really great posts from a couple of months or a year ago that new readers don't know about or that even regular readers would like to see again (if only they remembered)? Nuthin, that's what!

I got the first glimmer of this idea when reading Ryan's post from last Wednesday. He didn't have time to write new content that day so he recycled a fantastic post from the history of his blog. I would never have seen this post if he hadn't as I've only been reading him since July. What a jewel that was almost missed!

So my idea is a submission format similar to the Carnival but with different criteria. Instead of the best post of the past week we want the best post from the past, period. Say we put a cap at 2 months young being the most recent entry allowed.

Thoughts? Comments? Anybody care for a mint?

UPDATE: I'm topping this post hoping for more feedback. What's the best day of the week for a new compilation meme?

UPDATE2: Name changed to "Bestofme" instead of "Bestome". Too easy to mispronounce the original and miss the point.

I like it. I always feel like my best stuff is lurking way back in my archives and I don't even really HAVE any archives to speak of, but you know?--It just seems like the day I really think I hit it out of the park it's like, a Sunday or some day when no one reads anything, and then the good post gets buried under a mound of crap because I start posting new stuff just to keep it updated. Ugh.

I like it. The best part about resurrecting stuff from the past is looking at things you wrote back when and trying to figure out what brought THAT up at the time. Nothing younger than two months sounds good.

Okay, I think I'm going to go with it. I don't want to start during the holiday weekend since bloguse is so light. I'll muster support (email harrassment) next week and we'll get this meme launched the following week.

What is the best day of the week for a new complilation meme? I don't want to compete with the Carnivals or any of the other big boys.

Lesse, Friday is the Friday Five, Monday is Monday Memory, not sure really what days Bonfire or Carnival are, and isn't Cheddar X on Thursdays? Weekends, while pretty much open, have little to offer since blogging is lighter on weekends.... my vote is Mondays, since mine is a mere tadpole and unlikely to suck away any notice from yours. :)

My "Best of" has gone the way of the Dodo Bird -- due in part to the fact that I have a vicious ex-wife lurking and monitoring my every post. (Most posts referencing my husband -- her EX HUSBAND) have been removed.

I would LOVE to send you one -- but it doesn't fit your criteria.

I think, however, it is a SMASHING idea, darlink.

Mondays are a good day -- but what about Hump Day? Nobody has one of those Memes yet, do they? (I'm -- as always -- hopelessly out of touch.)

We have Wednesday Recycle day here. Just throwing out ideas. . . .LOL

Monday works for me. Start the week off with some great posts. How can you go wrong with that?

I'll start advertising this coming Monday for the first edition to start the Monday next. Don't want to get it lost in the holiday lull after all.

You've got plenty o' stuff, Margi! Why, you've got at least 3 posts about Snooze Button Dreams. Those are all golden. ;-)

It's a really, really, really good idea. Monday, though - ugh. I hate Monday. How about Wednesday?

Posted by: Beth Donovan at November 29, 2003 09:07 PM

Wednesday is the Carnival of the Vanities so that's a definite no-no. Blog Mela is Thursdays. Friday 5, Cheddar X and SnarkHunt are on Friday. Tuesday is the Bonfire of the Vanities and (I think) the Carnival of the Capitalists. Monday is the only day that's really clear of a conglomeration/multi-post type meme.

Posted by: Jim at November 29, 2003 11:40 PM

Hey! What about Monday Memory? Is that not a conglomeration/multi-post type meme?
Okay, lemme rephrase... is that not a wanna-be conglomeration/multi-post type meme?
Monday is a big day, there's plenty of room for memeage. :)

Monday Memory is more of the assignment/trackback format, like Cheddar X and Friday 5. With the Bestofme Symphony being the conglomeration style the two should be able to coexist peacefully. ;-)
