The girl with colitis goes by
(Category: Other People's Stuff )

I almost spewed when I read that misheard Beatles lyric this morning.

So what is "colitas" anyway? As in "Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air" from Hotel California? Like Dopple-G, I had always thought it was a desert flower of some kind. The Straight Dope gives us the answer in hillarious fashion. To cut to the chase, it's herb (the fun to smoke variety) and the Hotel California is a metaphor for cocaine addiction. But definitely read the Straight Dope - it's a side splitter.

What about:

"She's gotta chicken to ride" (another Beatles' classic)

or:

"'Scuse me, while I kiss this guy" (from Jimi Hendrix)

I like "There's a bathroom on the right" (CCR) and the classic "and there's a wino down the road" (Led Zep).

the campus i work at now is known as the place Henley wrote about. it is the state mental hospital here in camarillo, california (north of LA and south of Santa Barbara). it's cool to walk around the campus and see the "pink champagne on ice" (the color of the paint on the windows) and the various other reminders this was a mental hospital.

evidently Henley spent some time here.

check out http://www.csuci.edu/about/map/imap.htm for some shots of the campus.

now the actual place called the Hotel California is a real hotel south near San Diego on the way to Mexico.

just my 2 cents.

I always figured that Hotel California was the price of fame and success - it is a metaphor for the Limelight...

But as I think about it now, it doesn't really matter. Insanity, Fame, or Cocaine Addiction - it's all basically the same thing, right?
